When I was a kid, Judy Blume taught me all about being a girl. I’ve loved her ever since and have therefore been eagerly awaiting the release of Tiger Eyes, the very first movie to ever be based on one of Blume’s novels. (As a junior higher, Tiger Eyes destroyed me—feeling all of the feelings!) So lucky me that this week’s interview was with Willa Holland, the lovely star. We talked L.A. sunshine, Chef Boyardee, Chloe boots, and bringing Blume to life. Link to come!

This week’s interview with mah girl Lake, means I’m using “research” as an excuse to marathon Children’s Hospital. Totally cool, right? Lake’s reached my top echelon of awesome lately because of two things dear to my pop culture heart: 1) this episode of my favorite podcast, Professor Blastoff, and 2) this Sundance-premiered movie, which she wrote, directed, AND stars in. Auteur, hollllerrrrr!

I spend an ample amount of time reading wonderful things all over the Internet and sometimes I just want to TALK about them. Or at least give them a virtual s/o somewhere semi-permanent so I don’t forget their awesomeness. Inspired by the “I’m Reading” section in Ann Friedman‘s newsletter (what? You don’t…? Get on it.), I’m gonna link drop around these parts on a weekly basis. This time it’s an obvious one: Lizzy Goodman’s thorough and thought-provoking profile of Kim Gordon in the new issue of Elle. It offers so many levels of goodness, not least of which is the fact that everyone and their ex is talking about it and Gordon makes feminism seem so gd effortless and COOL, that this can only be beneficial for the world as we know it.

Case in point: “We’ve finished the dregs of our wine, and the sun has set. I’m interested in something Gordon was filmed saying about imprisoned members of the Russian activist punk band Pussy Riot: ‘Women make natural anarchists and revolutionaries, because they’ve always been second-class citizens, kinda having had to claw their way up.’ Gordon nods as I read back her quote: ‘I mean, who made up all the rules in the culture? Men—white male corporate society. So why wouldn’t a woman want to rebel against that?’”

Kim, comin’ through with the realness. My romantic optimism might still be reeling from her split with Thurston, but my love for Gordon is more meaningful than ever. Also, I like this response by one of my fave dude writers over at Grantland, and also, also, new writer girl crush.

This past weekend I spent the afternoon at Jared Leto’s house for a story. Sure, he may front a world-renowned rock band with a brand-new album coming out, but all I wanted to ask him about was this:

I am trying not to be weird about it, but I am completely in love with this adorable gal I interviewed for Daily Candy. Clara runs a vegan treats co. in L.A.—her cupcakes, etc. are totally delish AND her style is enviable. Did I mention she’s 16? I haven’t felt this inspired by a teen since lil’ Tavi came into my life. Her tiramisu madness is the stuff this sweet tooth’s dreams are made of.

I am lucky enough to interview all kinds of artists, DIYers, and creative crafters, and thanks to a story I’m working on now, I recently discovered the work of Kim Baise. She makes pure papier-mache magic in the form of mobiles (like this one above, a rumination on the meaning of “home”). The best part is, she takes custom orders. Thinkin’ I need one to commemorate my time in my three favorite cities: SF, NYC, L.A. Or perhaps just a West Coast/best coast California-themed piece? I want all the mobiles!

Yesterday I got to oversee a shoot for Elle, and lemme tell you, the entire experience was an A+. Cool location, one of my fave photographers, a supremely lovely stylist, and the most easygoing talent evs. Imma keep her name under wraps till the fashion story hits, but I will tell you she had something to do with the Kiernan Shipka feature I’m currently obsessed with in this month’s issue of Foam (the best So Cal mag in existence). Look at lil’ Sally, all grown up! (Tear.)

I recently fell into the rabbit hole of miniatures for this Etsy piece in which I compare a doll-size recreation of Lolita to a tab of acid and consequently got a piece of fan mail because of it. Truly, this teeny-tiny universe of craft has sufficiently blown my mind. Now, if only I could actually eat the world’s smallest banana.
